DeQuan Abrom Scores 22 Points Including 8 Free Throws Against Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - DeQuan Abrom scored 22 points, but Emmanuel College took an 80-73 victory over the Crusaders.  Belmont Abbey now sits at 10-12 on the year, with a 5-7 conference mark.  The Lions are now 12-8 overall and 6-4 against Conference Carolinas opponents.

Emmanuel jumped out to early leads of 7-0 and 18-2, but the Crusaders made three free throws in a span of 36 seconds.  Later in the half, they scored five points in a 28-second spurt to pull within 10 at 22-12.  A jump shot by Myron Carmon made it a six-point game at the 9:58 mark.  Carmon and Jacob Wilson combined for seven points in a span of 52 seconds to bring The Abbey to within a point at the 5:32 mark.  With 5:04 left in the period, Carmon gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game.  The defense was also strong, holding the Lions to no field goals for nearly four minutes during that stretch.  Aidan Richard and Abrom each made a layup in the final minute of the period, as Emmanuel led at halftime 43-38.

Belmont Abbey started the second half off very strong.  Thankgod Avar made a layup and two free throws, before a 3-pointer by Deion Lane tied the game at 45.  Then, starting at the 15:43 mark, Abrom scored eight straight Crusader points.  The game went back and forth for a while, as The Abbey kept converting its free throws, and not allowing Emmanuel to build a big lead.  Abrom again scored eight straight Abbey points, capped by a layup to notch the game at 69 with 3:52 left in the game.  A layup by Lane pulled Belmont to within three at 76-73 with 34 seconds to play.  In the end, the Lions took the 80-73 win.

For the game, Abrom's 22 points led The Abbey.  Three Crusaders grabbed five rebounds each.  Carmon handed out a game-high seven assists.

Belmont Abbey will next welcome Lees-McRae College on Wednesday, January 31 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
