Men's Soccer Strikes Twice In Second Half To Defeat Lees-McRae, 2-0

Belmont Abbey freshman Declan McQuillan and senior Jose Penaloza both scored in the second half to lead the Crusaders men's soccer team past the Lees-McRae Bobcats by a 2-0 score this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win snaps a six-match losing streak to the Bobcats. The last win over Lees-McRae prior to today was a 3-1 win on October 18, 2006. The win moves the Crusaders record to 4-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while Lees-McRae falls to 2-7-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Conference Carolinas.

After a scoreless first half in which the Bobcats outshot the Abbey 7-3, McQuillan put the Crusaders on top in the 64th minute. Ross Smith beat two defenders down the right side and slid a perfectly weighted cross to McQuilllan, who was unmarked in the center of the box, and the Kilkenney, Ireland native smashed home his first career goal.

19 minutes later, Penaloza made it 2-0 as he lashed home a shot past Thomas Rusling after Lucas Campoy served a cross to the feet of Penaloza just inside the 18 yard box.

Belmont Abbey outshot the Bobcats 8-1 in the final 45 minutes to earn an 11-8 edge for the match. Lees-McRae won the corner kick battle by an 8-6 count. Abbey goalkeeper Philip Bru made five saves.
