Crusaders Cruise to 99-53 Victory in Conference Opener

BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey topped 50 percent shooting for the first time this season and 12 different players tallied points as the Crusaders rolled to a 99-53 victory over Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center. Maria Kuhlman was among four Crusaders who reached double figures with 18 points.  It was the seventh year in a row The Abbey won its conference opener.

Belmont Abbey improves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Warriors fall to 4-4, 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Kuhlman, Irelynn Davisson tallied 15 points, with Caroline Tomey and Brittany Autry adding 11 and 10 points, respectively
  • Allie Downing topped double figures in rebounds for the fourth straight game with 10, while chipping in eight points and four assists, while Manuela Fungate contributed eight points and seven rebounds
  • The Crusaders led by only five, 21-16, after the first quarter, but posted advantages of 29-11 and 27-14 in the second and third periods
  • Southern Wesleyan never led in the contest. Neither team could score on its first two possessions before The Abbey hit three of four free throws for a 3-0 lead that later extended to 8-1
  • Belmont Abbey shot 52.9 percent from the field, including 76.9 percent (10 of 13) in the fourth quarter
  • The Crusaders forced 24 Southern Wesleyan miscues, converting those into a 34-6 advantage in points off turnovers
