BELMONT, N.C. - Morgan Patton tallied the lone goal of the day as the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win this afternoon. Before the contest seven seniors were honored: Morgan Altieri, Chandler Arrowood, Nicole Ferren, Emily Lipinski, Cassie Manion, Kooba Richard, and Hannah Siders. The Senior Day victory moves The Abbey to 9-3-1 on the year with a 5-2-1 Conference Carolinas record. Erskine is now 5-7-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference play.
In the 18th and 19th minutes, the Crusaders took each of the first two corner kicks of the game. Later in the half, The Abbey took four shots in a row, including one by sophomore Alex Butorovich that hit the crossbar. In the 37th minute, another Crusader shot hit the crossbar, this one by Patton. At halftime, the match was a scoreless tie, but the Crusaders took eight shots, while the defense limited the Flying Fleet to two.
It only took a minute and a half into the second half for Patton to put The Abbey in front 1-0 on a pass from Butorovich. After that, the Crusader defense did an outstanding job of blocking some Erskine shots. Belmont Abbey took a corner kick in the 56th minute, and took several shots after that to keep the pressure on Erskine. The tough defensive unit, led by Lipinski, continued to limit Erskine's opportunities the rest of the period and finished off the 1-0 victory.
On the day, The Abbey outshot the Flying Fleet 20-6 and took six corner kicks. Sophomore Jocelyn Cintron got the win in goal.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action on Wednesday, October 18, when it visits Columbus State. That match will kickoff at 4 p.m.
