Belmont Abbey Leads Hawn Cup after Fall Seasons

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey College has taken the early lead in the Conference Carolinas' Joby Hawn Cup standings after the completion of the league's fall championships.

The Hawn Cup, named in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn, is awarded to the league member that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored sports. The league awards an overall cup winner as well as individual winners for men's and women's sports. Points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish, with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point) in each sport.

In the overall tally, Belmont Abbey holds a slight edge over Limestone, gaining 43 points and a 0.796 rating compared to the Saints' 41.5 points and a 0.769 rating. As well as starting the year on top of the overall standings, The Abbey is also currently tied for the lead in the individual women's cup, tallying 29.5 points for a 0.868 rating. The Crusaders' success can be credited to their two championship runner-up finishes in women's volleyball and women's soccer. North Greenville also amassed 29.5 points to tie for first, while Limestone sits in third place with 26 points.

On the men's side, Belmont Abbey stands fourth overall, one spot better than this time a year ago. Lees-McRae College currently holds the top spot compiling 16 points and a 0.800 rating, while Limestone College is second with 15.5 points. The tight race finds Mount Olive in third with 15 points.
