The Belmont Abbey baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader at Barton this evening, dropping the seven inning opener 4-1 but rallying to even the series with a 19-11 victory in the nightcap.
The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at 1:00 from Fleming Stadium.
In the opener, Kayden Krause gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead with a one out homer in the top of the first, but Barton scored four unanswered to claim the win. The Bulldogs plated one in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Brandon Warren went the distance for the Bulldogs as he moved his record to 6-2. Warren struck out eight and allowed one run on four hits. Harry Ferguson took the loss as he allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings.
Weston Clarke led the Crusaders with two hits, both singles.
Game two was a slugfest, as the two teams combined for 30 runs on 31 hits.
After the hosts scored a run in the first, Belmont Abbey surged ahead with three runs in the third on a two RBI single by Clarke and a run scoring single by Colin Rosenbaum.
Barton tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Crusaders responded with two in the fourth, both scoring on an Anthony Dimino double, and two more in the fifth. Kevin Elefante scored on a passed ball and Lorenzo Wright doubled home Conor Kwalwasser.
That moved the lead to 7-3, and two innings later, the Crusaders exploded for eight runs and they tacked on four more in the eighth to power ahead 19-6.
Barton closed the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Crusaders lead was too great.
Matt Davenport moved to 4-3 as he gave up six runs on nine hits in six innings, fanning seven. Zach Breen took the loss after he allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits in three innings.
Dimino led the way with four hits and three RBI. Rosenbaum drove in four runs on two hits. Elefante, Clarke, Krause and Wright all had two hits apiece.
