Abbey Baseball Racks up a Dozen

The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a 12-11 victory today over the host Wingate Bulldogs.  The win improved the Crusaders' record to 2-1-1 while Wingate moved to 2-3.

The Crusaders opened the scoring in the first with a Matt McGarrry bunt single. The attempted throw to first got past the first baseman, rolling to the Crusaders bullpen, advancing McGarry to third. Kayden Krause singled sharply up the middle to score McGarry, putting the Abbey up 1-0. Wingate would answer with three runs in the first to lead 3-1.

The Bulldogs would trade blows with the Crusaders in the second highlighted by the Bulldog's Shane Billings solo homer to knot the game at four.

That is when the Crusaders would counter with their own fireworks in the third.  After a RBI double by Lorenzo Wright, Beinlich would slug an opposite field homer to give the Crusaders a 7-4 lead.  The Crusaders would extend the lead to 9-4 in the fifth with Wright's first homer of the year. Two more runs would cross the plate in the sixth, upping the Abbey advantage to 11-4.

Belmont Abbey struck out 12 Bulldog batters before Ross Garrett, entered the game in relief of Jeff Thompson in the third, thwarted the Bulldog's offense in the middle innings to earn the win. Garrett tossed 4.1 innings of one-hit relief while striking out four.

The Bulldogs would tighten things in the latter innings, scoring three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the lead to 11-10.

In the ninth, Beinlich would give the Abbey some needed insurance with a solo shot to right center field to give the Crusaders a 12-10 lead in support of Kyle Halbohn, who earned his first save of the season.

After a RBI single from Matthew Grecco trimmed the lead to 12-11, Halbohn struck Tyler Simmons to close the game. The win is the first road win of the season for the Abbey.

In the 19 hit attack, eight of the nine Crusaders starters recorded multi-hit games, with McGarry, Wright andColin Rosenbaum accounting for three hits each on the night.

The Abbey will return to action on Friday against Shippensburg. The Friday twinbill is the start to a five game homestand.  The Belmont Abbey Sports Network will air at 11:45 am.  Follow the action on
