Wrights Grand Slam Surges Crusaders Past Wingate

BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey Crusaders used a sixth inning grand slam from Lorenzo Wright to take down the Wingate Bulldogs at Abbey Yard. The nonconference win moves the Abbey record to 33-10-1, as Wingate moves to 27-18.

Matt Davenport took to the mound for what could be his final start at Abbey Yard. The Charlotte senior was looking for win number five, but ran into some early trouble in the first.

Shane Billings led off the game with a single through the left side for Wingate.  Three batters later, Bradley Brown hooked a ball into the right field corner to score Billings for a fast 1-0 lead.

Danny Dunning countered for Wingate and was solid in the abbreviated start. Dunning would go 2.2 innings on the night, but would not factor in the decision.

With Wingate leading in the bottom of the third, Conor Kwalwasser picked up a one out single. Kwalwasser would steal second and advance to third on a throwing error.

Nick Beinlich would tie the game with a RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Kwalwasser. The RBI gave the Pennsylvania native his 40th of the season.

Kayden Krause singled through the right side to extend the frame, giving Nick Nunziato a chance to break the tie.

Nunziato would come through with a ground rule double, scoring Krause and giving the Abbey a 2-1 lead.

Wingate would tie the game at two in the sixth as Brown would hit a solo homer to right field, just beyond the outstretched arms of Nick Beinlich.  The home run was Brown's eleventh on the season.

In the sixth, the Abbey would to come the aide of Davenport with some needed offense.  Lorenzo Wright would hammer an offspeed pitch deep beyond the scoreboard in left field for his fifth homer of the year.

The grand slam would be the lift Davenport needed, as he earned his fifth win of the year with the quality start.  On the evening, Davenport recorded four strikeouts, allowing three runs in 7.0 innings.

Ross Garrett and Kyle Halbohn would pitch the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win for Davenport.

Wright would lead the eight hit attack as the senior picked up the lone multi hit game in his 2 for 4 efforts.

The Crusaders will now look to close the conference schedule with a three game set at Mount Olive. Airtime on BASN is set for 5:45pm, with the internet stream being found at: www.basn.wgnc.net.
