CENTRAL, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed the sweep of Conference Carolinas Opponent Southern Wesleyan Saturday, beating the Warriors 15-9. Seven Crusaders recorded multi-hit games including Matt McGarry and Luke Cureton who added three hits apiece. The win is The Abbey's 10th consecutive victory pushing their record to 15-2 with a 6-0 conference record. Southern Wesleyan moves to 10-6 on the year with a 0-3 league record.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the first off back-to-back home runs from Jesse Getford and Julio Justo. Belmont Abbey managed to get one run back in the second when Cureton doubled and later scored on Kevin Elefante's single.
The Abbey took the lead in the fourth compiling four doubles as Cureton, Josh Genthe, McGarry, and Robert Lathrop all laced two-baggers. Four of the Crusaders hits drove in a run giving Belmont Abbey the 5-3 lead.
The Crusaders added three more runs in the fifth when Jakob Rolly registered an RBI single and Lathrop crushed his second RBI double of the game. Southern Wesleyan platted two runs in the bottom of the fifth utilizing a sac fly and RBI single from Quinton Bent.
The Crusaders added a run in the sixth as well as five in the seventh to add some insurance. Colin Rosenbaum laced a two-RBI single followed by a bases-loaded walk from Genthe. Cureton's ground ball produced another run and Thomas Yoder scored on a passed ball for the Crusader's 14th run.
SWU was able to get four runs back before Cureton's RBI single in the ninth sealed the game.
Abbey Starter Blake Waldren earned his second win of the year pitching 5.0 innings allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five. Josh Core of Southern Wesleyan was given the loss allowing five runs on eight hits in his 3.1 innings of work.
The Crusaders will travel to Hickory Tuesday to play Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m.
