MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The No. 16 Belmont Abbey baseball team came out of the gates swinging against the No. 6 Mount Olive Trojans, scoring two runs in the first innings but was not able to hold onto the lead as Mount Olive took the 5-3 win. The Crusaders are now 18-5 on the season and 7-3 in Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans are 14-4-1 with a 4-0 conference record.
Nick Beinlich went 3-for-4 including an RBI triple in the first inning to lead the Crusaders. Beinlich's triple scored Matt McGarry, who walked. Beinlich then scored on Luke Cureton's ground ball. Mount Olive tied the game in the second with three two-out hits.
Belmont Abbey retook the lead in the third when Kevin Elefante worked a bases-loaded walk. The Trojans were able to take back the lead in the bottom of the third utilizing two walks and two hits.
Crusader starter Cameron Busby tossed 5.0 innings allowing five runs on eight hits, three walks with one strikeout in the loss. Brighton Hudson recorded the win with six innings allowing seven hits, three runs, six walks and 10 strikeouts. Zach Zennaro earned his fourth save of the year.
Belmont Abbey continues their series with Mount Olive with a doubleheader tomorrow at 12 noon.
