Durham Scores Game-High 23 Points In 87-76 Loss At Barton

Belmont Abbey senior forward Darryl Durham posted a double double with game highs in points (23) and rebounds (14) but the Crusaders men's basketball team suffered an 87-76 loss at Barton this evening. The Bulldogs improve to 12-9 overall and 8-3 in league play, while the Abbey slips to 8-13 overall and 4-7 in Conference Carolinas.

Durham posted his seventh double double of the year as he scored 23 points on 10-13 shooting from the floor with 14 rebounds, nine on the offensive glass. He added a blocked shot and an assist in 31 minutes of action.

Chris Davis netted 17 while Justin Kuhlman and Jonathon Garrett contributed 11 and ten, respectively. Kuhlman posted eight assists. Belmont Abbey shot 45 percent from the floor and finished five of 15 from three-point range. The Crusaders made 17-24 from the line.

The Crusaders led for most of the first half as their largest lead was nine points as they started the game on a 13-4 run, punctuated by a Davis three pointer with just under five minutes gone by.

Barton scored the next seven points to inch within two, but a Durham putback stemmed the tide and moved the cushion back to four. The Crusaders answered every Barton charge, going on a 7-3 run after Barton tied the game at 19, as a Garrett jumper extended the lead to five at 27-22 with 9:37 left.

From there, however, Barton closed the half on a 25-11 run to carry a 47-33 halftime lead.

The second half began much like the first, as the Abbey opened with an offensive surge, using a 9-2 run to open the half and close the lead to seven at 49-42 with 16:19 left.

Barton immediately answered by raising its lead back to double digits, getting it to as many as 16 at 79-63 with 5:15 left.

Belmont Abbey mustered one last charge, going on an 8-1 run to chop the lead back down to nine at 80-71 with 2:20 left, but Barton regrouped and outscored the Abbey 7-5 the rest of the way to earn an 87-76 win.
