Four Top Double Figures in 90-81 Win at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. -- DeQuan Abrom led a trio of double-figure scorers with a game-high 27 points, leading Belmont Abbey to a 90-81 victory at Erskine in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action on Saturday. The Crusaders never trailed in the contest, but needed a late 8-0 run to create some breathing room.

With the win, The Abbey improves to 18-6 overall, 13-3 in league play, while the Flying Fleet fall to 12-9, 7-6.


  • Abrom, who has averaged 40.7 points per game over the last three outings, was held to just seven in the first half. However, he connected on six of nine shots (including his only three-point try) and seven of nine at the free throw line to finish with 27.
  • Romeao Ferguson tallied 21 points and a team-high nine boards, while Aidan Richard topped double figures for the second time this season with 12 points. Ben Ferguson added 11 points and four boards.
  • Sean Halloran dished out five assists while making two steals.
  • The shooting numbers were a tale of two halves as the Crusaders hit 55.2 percent (16 of 29) in the opening period, but cooled to just 50.0 percent for the game. Erskine started slowly at 37.0 percent, but connected at a 54.2 percent clip after intermission.
  • Belmont Abbey opened the game with the first six points, then stretched the advantage to 15-2 over the first five minutes. The Flying Fleet cut the gap to four, but the Crusaders rallied to lead 41-34 at the break.
  • In the second half, The Abbey again started strong, building a 15-point advantage, 62-47, near the midway point. But the hosts responded, chipping away to just three, 70-67 with 6:15 to play.
  • The score was 79-76 after a Flying Fleet three with 2:54 left, but Ben Ferguson started an 8-0 run with a three-pointer to stop the threat.
  • The Crusaders hit eight of 10 free throws in the final 1:20 to clinch the victory.


  • Belmont Abbey enjoys a week off before hitting the road again next Saturday. The Crusaders travel to Mount Olive for the conference rematch of a thrilling 95-92 overtime win on Jan. 30. In the contest, Abrom tallied 42 points including a tying three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and the game-winner with 2.9 seconds remaining.
