Ferguson Leads Crusaders to 98-93 Victory over Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- All five Belmont Abbey starters reached double figures and the Crusaders hit eight of 10 free throws in the final minute, leading to a hard-fought 98-93 victory at Emmanuel in the regular-season finale Tuesday night. Romeao Ferguson posted his sixth double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 rebounds.


  • DeQuan Abrom led Belmont Abbey with 23 points, while hitting 12 of 16 from the free-throw line.
  • Sean Halloran scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists, while John Bowen added 15 points and nine rebounds. Ben Ferguson rounded out the scoring lead with 11 points, while adding five rebounds.
  • The five double-figure scorers tied a season high. The Crusaders also had a quintet reach 10+ points against Erskine (Jan. 3) and Christendom (Jan. 16).
  • Belmont Abbey hit nine of its first 12 shots for a 21-17 lead near the middle of the first half.
  • A 9-0 run in the later in the period pushed a 39-38 lead to double digits, 48-38 with 2:12 remaining in the period.
  • The Crusader shot 60 percent in the first half and held a 52-41 advantage at the break.
  • Six straight Emmanuel points brought the Lions back to within four, 58-54, but Romeao Ferguson tallied back-to-back baskets and Ben Ferguson canned a three to send the lead back to 11.
  • The biggest lead of the contest was 15 at 75-60 with 8:56 to play, but Emmanuel would not quit.
  • The Lions closed the gap with a 9-1 run that made the score 83-78 at the 2:37 mark. The margin was down to 95-93 with 20 seconds left, but Abrom hit one of two and Bowen sealed the game with a pair with seven seconds left.
  • Head Coach Billy Taylor established a personal high for wins as a head coach. His 2003-04 Lehigh team finished 20-11.


  • Belmont Abbey earns the No. 2 seed for the Conference Carolinas Tournament and will host No. 7 Limestone in a quarterfinal round matchup Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The teams split the regular-season series with each team winning at home.
