Crusaders Voted as Preseason Conference Carolinas Favorite

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Belmont Abbey, runners-up in Conference Carolinas a year ago, has been voted as the 2019-20 favorite, the league office announced today. The Crusaders narrowly edged out Barton in voting by the league's head coaches.

The Abbey captured three first-place votes and a total of 98 points, just three more than the Bulldogs, who also were listed first on three ballots. Mount Olive was the only one in the top six to not receive a first-place vote, but the Trojans with 86 total points finished just one spot ahead of King (85) in third place despite the Tornado receiving two first-place votes. Defending champion Emmanuel was tabbed fifth with one first-place vote and a total of 83 points, while Lees-McRae received two first-place votes to sit in sixth with a total of 72 points.

Limestone was tabbed seventh with 50 points followed by Erskine (47), Chowan (42), Southern Wesleyan (32) and North Greenville (25).

The Crusaders return Player of the Year and first-team all-conference selection DeQuan Abrom, who is listed as a preseason All-America choice by both the Division II Bulletin and Street & Smith's. Returning all-conference selection Romeao Ferguson and sophomore point guard Sean Halloran were also listed as Players to Watch.

Belmont Abbey opens the 2019-20 schedule at home on Friday, November 8 when it hosts the Hampton Inn by Hilton Tip-Off Classic. The Crusaders face Mars Hill at 7:30 p.m. following a matchup between Limestone and Wingate.
