Steele Scores Seven Times As Men's Lacrosse Erupts For 22 Goals In Big Victory Over Coker

Belmont Abbey senior attack Scotty Steele scored seven goals and assisted on another as he led a potent Abbey offense that netted 22 goals in a 22-12 win over Coker this afternoon. The win, the Abbey's third in the past four games, pulls the record even at 5-5, while the Cobras drop to 4-4.

The Crusaders led 8-4 at the half but the two teams combined to score 15 goals in the third period. Belmont Abbey netted eight of those, and then the Crusaders put the game away in the third by outscoring the Cobras 6-1. Three of the Abbey's last four goals in the game came on man-up situations.

Belmont Abbey never trailed but the contest was tied once, at 2-2 as Coker opened the second period with a goal. That was quickly erased by two Abbey markers-Steele and Riley Quinlan-that gave the Abbey the lead for good.

The third period was an offensive barrage that saw 15 goals scored on 26 shots. Belmont Abbey netted eight on 14 shots as Joey McGinley scored all three of his goals in the period.

The Cobras scored the last two of the quarter to send the two teams into the final 15 minutes with the Abbey leading 16-11.

Belmont Abbey dominated the final quarter, outscoring Coker 6-1 as Steele netted the first two, followed by three consecutive man-up winners from Quinlan. Belmont Abbey scored the last five goals of the game, the final two from Will Chastain.

The Crusaders outshot Coker 57-26 and the Abbey won a season-high 26 face-offs (out of 37 attempts) as Jamie Wolf won all of them. Belmont Abbey was a perfect six for six on man-up situations.

Brett Lawless made five saves and scooped up three ground balls.

Steele finished with seven goals on 14 shots. He added one assist. Quinlan and Chastain both netted four, a career-high for each. McGinley and Connor Sellars both totaled three. Sellars recorded four assists. Max Mullin had the other goal.
