Abbey Falls to Royals for First Loss of Season

By John Fitzgerald

The Abbey's Men's Lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season today in a road game at Queens.  The loss drops the Abbey record to 2-1 while Queens improved to 3-1.

Queens struck early with two goals in the game's first five minutes.  Just three minutes later another goal put the Royals in front 3-0.  By the 5:00 mark in the first quarter, Queens had built a 5-0 lead.  The Crusaders, though, ended the quarter on a run as they scored two goals in the final 2:19 to cut the deficit to 5-2 going into the second quarter.

In the second, the Abbey capitalized on a slashing penalty by Queens as Adam Wiedemann scored a man-up goal for the Crusaders to make it a 6-3 lead.  Later in the quarter, Queens scored its seventh goal of the game, and the Abbey responded its own goal 1:18 later to pull within three.  Queens scored another goal, and again the Abbey responded just 1:04 later, as Cooper Seidewand found the back of the net to make it an 8-5 Royals lead, which would be the score at halftime.

The second half began slowly for Belmont Abbey, as Queens scored four goals in the first five minutes of the third to go up 12-5.  Queens took a 13-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the last eight minutes of the game, Belmont Abbey got some offense going, as it scored two goals in a 56-second span to pull within five, 14-9.  With just over two minutes left in the game, Kyle McGinley scored to make it a 14-10 game.  In the end, Queens took the game 16-10.

On the day, Wiedemann led the Crusaders' attack with four goals on six shots on goal.  Richard Fischer contributed with two goals on two shots.  Devin Cruz paced the Abbey's defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Goalie Harley Whitham logged 14 saves.

The Abbey will be back in action on Saturday when it welcomes Wingate on Mountain Island Lacrosse Club Day.
