Abbey Competes in Battle of Top 10 Teams

BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team lost a battle of two top 10-ranked teams this afternoon at Alumni Field.  The 12-6 defeat put the #10-ranked Abbey at 1-1 on the year, while #6-ranked Mercyhurst moved to 1-0.

The Lakers scored first with three goals late in the first quarter to own a 3-0 lead heading into the second.  Belmont Abbey, though, took charge in the second when MJ Miller set up attacker Liam Osborne for the first Abbey goal at the 6:51 mark.  Three minutes later, Miller handed another assist to fellow junior Callum Tanner.  This made it a 5-2 Mercyhurst lead at halftime.

The Crusader surge continued into the third, as midfielder Billy Huss won the opening faceoff, ran downfield and scored 18 seconds into the half.  The Crusaders pulled within two at 5-3 and had momentum.  Unfortunately, Mercyhurst made a run of its own late in the third to own an 11-3 lead going into the final period.  The Crusaders did make a push in the fourth, as junior Kyle McGinley took advantage of a man-up opportunity just 1:03 into the quarter.  He scored another man-up goal at the 4:57 mark to make it 11-5.  The late run, however, was not enough to get the Abbey in front, and the Lakers took the contest 12-6.

On the day, McGinley led the Crusader offensive effort, with two goals and an assist.Osborne added two goals, while Miller and Adam Wiedemann each handed out two assists.  Junior Harley Whitham made seven saves in goal.  Huss won nine faceoffs.  The Crusaders converted on three of their seven man-up opportunities.

Belmont Abbey will next take the field on Saturday, February 25, when it hosts Lake Erie for a 1pm matchup.
