Tanner, Defense Lead Crusaders Past Hawks 18-7

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Senior Callum Tanner scored five goals this afternoon at Chowan University, and the Crusaders won the contest 18-7.  The Abbey now stands at 6-3 in 2018 with a 1-0 Conference Carolinas record.  Chowan is now 3-6 on the year, and 0-3 in conference play.

It did not take Adam Wiedemann long to put the Crusaders on the board first.  At the 9:18 mark, Jack Pigott set up Kyle McGinley for a score and an early 4-1 Crusader lead.  The Hawks did score a goal before the quarter expired to make it a 4-2 Abbey lead going into the second.

Just two minutes into the second, Tanner recorded his second goal of the day.  Then at the 3:44 mark, Wiedemann tallied his second score of the contest, as the Crusaders owned a 7-3 advantage at halftime.  At this point, the faceoff unit, led by Dylan Harmon, had won 10 of its 11 faceoffs.  Defensively, the Crusaders limited Chowan to 18 shots in the half and caused 12 Hawk turnovers.

Wiedfemann handed out two assists to begin the third, first to Liam Osborne, then on a man-up opportunity to Tanner.  Later in the quarter, Tanner scored two Abbey goals in a row, giving the Crusaders a commanding 13-4 lead.  Osborne scored again with three seconds in the period, and The Abbey held a 14-6 lead heading into the final period.

Chowan csored a goal at the 13:!2 mark, but from there it was all Abbey.  James Booth and Conor Larkin tallied goals late in the game.  Brendan McGovern added a man-up goal to cap the scoring as The Abbey finished the game with an 18-7 victory.  The stingy defensive unit gave up just nine Chowan shots in the second half, while forcing 14 turnovers.

Tanner led The Abbey offensively with five goals and an assist.  On the defensive end, the Crusaders forced 26 turnovers, led by Jeff Putz with four.  Anthony Cesario caused three.  Dylan Harmon was very strong on faceoffs, winning 22 of his 26.  His 14 ground balls were a game-high.

Belmont Abbey will visit Emmanuel (GA) on Wednesday, March 28, for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
