Late Goal By Erskine Grounds Men's Soccer, 1-0

Erskine forward Ross Henderson scored the only goal of the match in the 80th minute as the Flying Fleet earned a 1-0 Conference Carolinas men's soccer victory this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Fleet improve to 3-3-1 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Conference Carolinas.

Playing under overcast skies and on a damp pitch from a constant morning shower, the match was a defensive struggle as both goalkeepers kept the offenses off of the scoreboard for 79 minutes. Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Kyle Searles stopped three shots in the first half, including a pair of headers from six yards out, while Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina stopped six shots in the first half.

The match was looking as if it would go to an extra period until the Henderson took advantage of an Abbey back line error to score the only goal.

Searles came way off his line to run down a loose ball, but he never got to it. A Fleet forward beat him to the ball and slided the ball over to Henderson on the left flank, where he dribbled unmarked and kicked the ball into the empty net for the score.

Belmont Abbey increased the pressure after allowing the goal, but De La Vina, who recorded nine saves, turned away every chance.

The Crusaders best chance came with 27 minutes left as Conor Wells got free in the center of the box and his shot sailed towards the net, but De La Vina pushed it up over the crossbar to preserve the clean sheet.

Belmont Abbey outshot Erskine 17-16 and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Crusaders totaled 15 fouls while Erskine was whistled for ten.
