Men's Soccer Downed By Barton, 3-1

The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to the visiting Barton College Bulldogs this afternoon at Alumni Field. Barton scored the first three goals of the match before senior captain Conor Wells added a late goal for the Crusaders. Barton improves to 5-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 4-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in league play.

Barton held a slight edge in shots at 13-12 as got on the board in the 22nd minute. Archer Bane sent a cross from the left side, where Danilo Matos beat his mark and headed home the shot past Kyle Searles for the 1-0 lead.

Nine minutes later, Dante DeLuca scored the first of his two goals as his one touch from a Austin Tausch cross scooted into the net to increase the Bulldogs lead to 2-0.

That was all of the scoring until the 52nd minute when Barton added another, as DeLuca found the back of the net for the second time as he ran down a through-ball from Erik PaJunk and scored low and left.

Belmont Abbey scored its goal in the 88th minute as Wells netted his first goal of the year, scoring a header far post off of a Mark Wallace corner kick with just 2:50 left on the clock to provide the final margin.

Belmont Abbey held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and were called for just four fouls, while Barton was whistled for 14.

Searles made three saves before giving way to Dominic Schneider, who tended the net for the final 24:58.
