The Belmont Abbey men's volleyball team lost at the University of Mount Olive by a 3-0 score this afternoon in the final road match of the 2014 season. Set scores were 25-27, 13-25 and 20-25. Mount Olive improves to 13-10 overall and 10-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 3-24 overall and 1-12 in league play.
Belmont Abbey will close out its second season of men's volleyball Tuesday night at 7:00 when welcoming the Erskine Flying Fleet to the Wheeler Center.
The Crusaders trailed 24-22 in the first set but won the next two points on an Evan Young kill and a Trojans attack error to knot the set at 24. Mount Olive gained set point on the next play, but a Brennan Beyner kill deadlocked the stanza again. Mount Olive won the next two points on a service error followed by an ace to take a 1-0 lead.
Mount Olive won the second set easily as it moved out to a comfortable 11-4 lead and never looked back.
Belmont Abbey battled in the third set, tying it at 16 before the Trojans won nine of the final 13 points to complete the sweep.
Beyner led the Abbey with six kills while Young and Brandon Kimbrell both added five. Derek Sullivan handed out 23 assists with Spencer Fournell adding three. Robert Nixon had two service aces and Kimbrell recorded one.
