The Belmont Abbey men's volleyball team won the opening set and claimed the last two after dropping the middle set as the Crusaders defeated Limestone for the first time in the three year history of the program with a 3-1 triumph tonight inside the Timken Center. Belmont Abbey won by scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-23 & 25-22 as it improves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Saints drop to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Limestone won all four of the previous meetings by 3-0 scores as the Abbey had never taken a set from Limestone prior to this evening.
Belmont Abbey hit .231 as Nolan Albrecht, who earlier today was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, the first Crusader to earn the honor, led all players with 16 kills. Dustin Buell added 11 as he hit .579 for the match. Brennan Beyner added nine, while setter Derek Sullivan totaled five on six attacks with one error (.667) while handing out 40 assists. Albrecht also logged a career-high with five service aces. Anthony Pippen added a pair.
Defensively Albrecht's 11 digs led the way, with libero Jon Lowenhagen adding 10.
The Crusaders closed out the Saints behind a sterling .321 attack in the fourth set, logging 13 kills on 28 attacks with just four errors.
Belmont Abbey is back in action in eight days when it hosts Mount Olive on February 18.
