TIGERVILLE, SC - The Belmont Abbey College men's volleyball team improved to 9-5 in Conference Carolinas play and 14-8 overall with a 3-1 win over North Greenville University. The Abbey and NGU split the first two sets 25-19 and 20-25 but Belmont Abbey took sets three and four 25-20 and 25-21. With the win, the Abbey is on a five match winning streak and are sitting fourth in the Conference below Barton.
Senior middle blocker Justin Snyder led both teams with four blocks and hitting a .778 clip with 0 errors. Both senior setter Derek Sullivan and Alex Schinzing tallied 43 assists. Senior outside hitter Nolan Albrecht led all players with 19 kills, 15 digs and 40 attacks. Junior outside hitter Robert Nixon led all players with four aces.
In the first set, the teams traded points the first 10 points. At five apiece, a Jon Childes attack error spurred a four-point service run. From Nixon's run, the Crusaders held the lead and did not let NGU within two. At 19-16, Albrecht and Beyner went on a four-point spur to bring the Abbey up 23-16.
The Abbey trailed the entire second set with their biggest deficit of six. Midway through the set, Albrecht, Lowenhagen and Sullivan made a push to bring the score even but North Greenville was able to close out the set in their favor.
Set three and four were much like the first where both teams started even until Belmont Abbey pulled away in the first 10 points. The only time the Abbey trailed in those sets were within the first eight points.
The Abbey hosts Barton Bulldogs Wednesday, March 30 at 5:00 PM.
