BELMONT, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell had six kills but a team hitting percentage of .040 sent Belmont Abbey to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-16) setback against Coker in men's volleyball action Friday night at the Wheeler Center. Gavin Schaffer and Brennan Breyer each added five kills for the Crusaders.
Pierce Pliapol had 17 assists in the Belmont Abbey attack, while Joao Victor Santos led all players with 12 kills for Coker (2-0).
The teams started the match by splitting 10 points before Belmont Abbey went on a 3-1 run for an 8-6 lead. But the Cobras responded with three straight points for a 9-8 advantage. With the score tied 13-13, Coker again gained three in a row to take the lead for good, then fought off a late Crusader push. The Abbey closed to 20-18 but the Cobras won three of the next four points for a 23-19 lead. The Crusaders saved two set points, but a service error gave CC a 25-23 win in the opening set.
After a 4-4 tie to begin the second, t the Cobras scored three straight points for a 7-4 lead. After Belmont Abbey (0-3) closed to within 9-7, Coker rattled off four points in a row to open a six-point advantage, 13-7. The Crusaders tried to rally, cutting the deficit to four on three occasions, including 21-17, but the Cobras closed the set with the last four points for a 25-17 victory.
In the final set, Coker won the first three points and eight of the first 11. Belmont Abbey trimmed the difference to three, 11-8, but another 3-0 run pushed the lead back to six. The Cobras claimed the set, 25-16, and the match by scoring the final three points.
For the match, Coker hit .351 (40-14-74), while the Crusaders had 25 kills and 22 errors in 75 attempts.
Belmont Abbey returns to action with a Conference Carolinas matchup against Mount Olive on Tuesday.
