Maxwell, Nixon Top Double Figures in Kills

BELMONT, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell and Robert Nixon each topped double figures in kills for the first time this season with 13 and 10, respectively, but Mount Olive earned a 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 18-25, 25-17) men's volleyball victory over Belmont Abbey.

The Crusaders (0-4, 0-2) registered a season-high 14 blocks, led by Brennan Breyer with eight (one solo and seven assists), but were outhit .184 to .162. The Trojans had a hitting advantage in each of sets they won, while The Abbey posted a .286 to -.088 edge in its third-set win.

In the opening set, Mount Olive used five straight points to turn a 7-4 lead into 12-4, then never allowed the Crusaders to close to within five at 19-14. The second set was much tighter in the beginning with UMO opening a slight 8-7 lead before winning 12 of the next 13 points enroute to a 2-0 lead in the match.

But the Crusaders never quit. They broke a 4-4 tie with back-to-back points, then scored four of the next six for a 10-6 lead. After a Mount Olive point, a 4-0 run push the margin to seven, 14-7. The Trojans could never fully recover, closing to within 22-18 before Belmont Abbey ended the set with three straight points to stay alive.

In the fourth, the Crusaders led 11-8, but Mount Olive scored eight straight to seize control.

Belmont Abbey wraps up ts season-opening five-game homestand on Tuesday against Lees-McRae.
