MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Brennan Beyner tallied 11 kills and two blocks, but Belmont Abbey could not overcome Mount Olive's .310 hitting percentage in a 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 25-18 setback in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action Friday night.
Belmont Abbey (3-10, 2-7) led the first set 19-18, but Mount Olive (11-6, 9-1) scored three straight points to take the lead. The Crusaders tallied two of the next three to trail 22-21, however, the Trojans answered with a 3-1 run to close out the set 25-22.
In the second set, Belmont Abbey hit an incredible .591 with 14 kills against just one error. It started on a 5-0 enroute to an 8-2 advantage. After UMO rallied to 11-9, an 11-5 run pushed the lead to eight, 22-14. The Trojans tried to rally again, but the Crusaders evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 victory.
Mount Olive seized control of the third set by tallying five straight points after a 4-4 tie and turned a 6-4 lead in the fourth into 18-8 with a 12-4 surge.
Belmont Abbey continues its road swing tomorrow at Barton.
