Maxwell Leads Crusaders to 3-1 Win at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Liam Maxwell registered a career-high 26 kills and hit .469 and Brian Long added 10 kills on a .529 percentage, leading Belmont Abbey to a 3-1 (25-22, 32-34, 25-23, 25-23) victory over Erskine Friday night in Conference Carolina men's volleyball action. Maxwell's effort marked the eighth time in nine matches he has posted double-figure kills and follows a 23-kill effort on Tuesday night.

Bryce Sullivan tallied 48 kills, while Rob Valentine added 14 digs for the Crusaders (4-5, 3-1).

Belmont Abbey led by as many as five, 9-4, early in the opening set, but the score was later tied at 20. Maxwell broke the tie with a kill, then served the Crusaders to a 22-20 lead. After a service error, Maxwell gained a side out with another kill for a 23-21 lead. After another Erskine point, the Crusaders scored back-to-back points for the 25-22 win.

The second set was the longest of the year for the Crusaders, with the Flying Fleet needed nine extra points to even the match. Each team had its chances with Belmont Abbey holding six set points and Erskine four before the hosts pulled out the victory.

Belmont Abbey trailed 16-11 in the third before rallying. The Crusaders scored five straight points to tie, but the Flying Fleet quickly answered with back-to-back kills. The difference was still two at 21-19 when The Abbey tallied three in a row for a 22-21 lead. After the score was tied at 23-23, Maxwell had a kill before an Erskine attack error gave the Crusaders a 25-23 win.

Another big rally in the fourth set gave Belmont Abbey the match win. The Crusaders trailed 20-14, but scored four straight to start the comeback. Erskine rebounded with three straight for a 23-20 lead, but The Abbey ended the match with five straight points, two of which came from Maxwell.

The Crusaders continue their weekend trip with a league match at Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon.
