MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell tallied eight kills, but Conference Carolinas leader Mount Olive was too much for Belmont Abbey Friday in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-14) decision in men's volleyball action. The Crusaders hit just .044, while the Trojans connected at a .310 clip.
Mount Olive (7-3, 5-0) opened the match with a pair of 3-0 runs around a Belmont Abbey point. The Crusaders closed to within 8-4, but the Trojans rattled off another three straight. With the score 18-11, UMO used a 5-1 spurt to lead by 11 before The Abbey got back-to-back points to close to 23-14. The Crusaders fought off two set points, but Mount Olive took the set 25-16.
The teams were tied 5-5 in the second when UMO scored consecutive points to start a 7-3 run. After Belmont Abbey cut the lead to 13-11, the Trojans tallied six of the next seven points to lead 19-12. With the score 24-15, the Crusaders saved five set points, but UMO prevailed 25-20.
A 2-0 start to the third led to a 6-3 Trojan lead. They built the margin to 12-6 and then 16-8, but Belmont Abbey scored three in a row to trail by five, 16-11. However, UMO closed out the match with a 9-3 run that made the final score 25-14.
Belmont Abbey wraps up a four-match Conference Carolinas road trip tomorrow with a match at Barton.
