Tim Gill finished 7th overall in a time of 25:42 to lead the Belmont Abbey College Men's Cross Country Team to a 5th Place finish in the Conference Carolinas Championships hosted by the Crusaders at Liske Park in Concord, NC.
Gill's time of 25:42 was a career best and earned him 2nd Team All Conference Carolinas. The overall winner of the race was Dylan Lafond of Mt Olive who set a new conference best mark with a time of 24:15 for the 8000m event.
Mount Olive was the Team Champion with a point total of 29 and they were followed by King (53 points) and North Greenville with 114. Pfeiffer was 4th with 122 and the Abbey Men totaled 132.
Ryan Caulley (29th, 27:43), Dustin Stewart (32nd, 27:53), Frank Spicer (40th, 28:20), and Darren Balkey (45th, 28:32) rounded out the Top 5 scorers for the Men. Michael Rogers (58th, 29:16) and Sidney Smith (60th, 29:21) filled out the Top 7.
Coach Mike De Witt commented on the efforts of the Men's Team: "We raced tough as a whole from start to finish, but we did get carried out too fast in the excitement of the championships and paid for it with most everyone running the 2nd half 30 to 60 seconds slower than their 1st 4 km. It was a combination of the front of the field being very talented, a perfect racing weather day, as well as our home course looking easier than it really is. We were expecting to challenge for the 3rd spot, but the teams ahead of us ran very well to their credit. Tim Gill did an excellent job, running with a very talented group of conference runners earning an unofficial school best time over the 8000m, his previous best was 25:58. We have a couple of weeks to regroup and run a better team race at the Regional Meet."
