Crusaders Split with Bobcats, Winning Finale 2-1

BELMONT, NC - Belmont Abbey earned a split with Lees-McRae on Saturday at Crusaders Field.

In the opener, Sam Jacobs started for the Abbey, and was very effective through the day, allowing just two hits in her seven innings of work.

The Bobcats would open the scoring in the first, as Emily Merriman doubled home Kara Cunningham to give starting pitcher Taylor Billings the early lead.

The Abbey would respond as Jena Reisenauer scored Brooke Pegram on a RBI single to even things after one inning.

In the second, Mackenzie Dziendziel would score Lauren Clifford to give the Abbey a 2-1 lead.

Jacobs would make the lead stick until the sixth, as Lees-McRae took advantage of an Abbey error to go ahead 3-2. The pair of unearned runs would leave Jacobs on the hook for the loss, as the senior gave up just one earned run while striking out nine Bobcats.

The Crusaders weren't able to make up the lost lead, leaving the Abbey needing a win in game two to draw even on the day.

Billings got the win, moving her to 4-3 on the season.

In game two, trailing by a single run, the Crusaders would get a lift from freshman Brittany Ortiz to earn the split. Ortiz would drive home Reisenauer in the fourth with a double to even the game through four innings.

In the sixth, Ortiz would factor again, as the California native scored Brooke Pegram with a RBI fielder's choice to give the Abbey a 2-1 lead.

Laura Williams would make the lead hold up, pitching a scoreless seventh to earn her third win. Williams allowed just one hit in her three innings of relief.

The Crusaders outhit LMC 13-8 on the day, as Reisenauer collected three hits, driving home a run and scoring a second.

The Crusaders will now go on the road for two weeks before returning to Crusaders Field on April 16 vs Emmanuel. The home doubleheader is the final Conference Carolinas home date on the schedule for 2016.
