BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey softball team faced Lenoir-Rhyne at Crusader Field today in its season opener. Lenoir-Rhyne won the first contest 6-5 and the second one 9-0. The Abbey now sits at 0-2 in 2017, while the Bears are 2-0.
In the first game, Lenoir-Rhyne scored three first-inning runs, but Belmont Abbey fought back, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Claire Doyle brought home Vienna Benavides, while freshman Melissa Neyhouse scored on a Dani Marietta play.
In the second inning, the Crusaders scored three runs, capped by Benavides crossing home plate for the second time, giving the Abbey a 5-3 lead.
The defensive unit kept the Bears scoreless in the third. Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead in the fifth with two runs. The Crusaders continued to get runners on base, but just not enough to put any more runs up, and Lenoir-Rhyne took Game One 6-5.
Anna Mixa led the Abbey with two hits and an RBI. Senior pitcher Shanna Mas tossed four strikeouts.
In the second matchup, Mixa, Peyton Wilson, and Doyle each recorded hits for the Abbey. Wilson also did the pitching for the first 3.1 innings. The Bears, however, won the game 9-0.
The Crusaders will next take the field on Tuesday, February 7, when they visit the Wingate Bulldogs.
