Crusaders Battle No. 4 Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey softball team battled the fourth-ranked Pfeiffer Falcons in a conference doubleheader Wednesday night, but dropped game one 10-0 and game two 6-2.

On the day, Melissa Neyhouse recorded three hits and Alexis Rogers had two hits for the Crusaders (9-30-2, 6-17).

Game one's offensive attack was led by Neyhouse, Dani Marietta, and Mackenzie Dziendziel as they collected the Crusaders' three hits.

Pfeiffer (40-4, 18-2) was able to take the lead in the first inning, benefitting from a sacrifice fly and three-run homer. The Falcons scored four more in the second as they collected two hits and two walks. Pfeiffer rounded out their scoring effort with two runs in the third, coming from three straight singles.

Shannan Mas started in the circle for the Crusaders, then she was relieved by Amelia Saldivar, who struck out a batter in her inning of work. Tina Sanders pitched the last two innings for The Abbey.

Kiana Millsaps earned the win for Pfeiffer, her eighth of the year, pitching 3.0 innings while allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout.

The Abbey jumped out to a quick lead in game two as Vienna Benavides scored on Neyhouse's first-inning triple down the left-field line.

Pfeiffer responded with three runs in the second, taking advantage of three doubles, to take its first lead of the game. The Falcons would add to that lead in the fifth by scoring two runs on three singles.

Belmont Abbey cut into the Falcon's lead as it platted a run in the sixth when Neyhouse doubled and Marietta drove her in with a sacrifice fly. Pfeiffer added an insurance run in the sixth after back-to-back hits.

Neyhouse and Alexis Rogers recorded the Crusaders' four hits in game two. Annabeth Watkins tossed the complete game for The Abbey, allowing six runs in nine hits with only one walk and three strikeouts. Sydney Poole earned the win for Pfeiffer, pitching 6.1 innings allowing one run on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Belmont Abbey will honor its seniors before Saturday's 2 p.m. doubleheader against St. Andrews.
