Crusader Softball Competes in Pioneer Classic

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Alexis Pereiro recorded three hits and scored a run, but Belmont Abbey lost a pair of games in the Pioneer Classic at Tusculum College by scores of 9-5 and 10-0.  The Abbey is now 7-15 overall.  The Pioneers are now 13-8.

In game one, Tusculum struck first, with two runs and another in the second.  Then in the third inning, the Abbey offense came alive, as Alexis Pereiro singled, and a single by Chace Helms advanced Pereiro to third.  Kaitlin Moore hit a single up the middle bring Pereiro home and make it a 3-1 game.

The fourth inning was another strong one for the Crusaders offensively.  Brooke Pegram walked to start the inning, before Peyton Wilson doubled her home.  Later in the inning, Helms hit a single through the left side that brought home pinch runner Brianna Embler and brought The Abbey to within three at 6-3.

The Crusaders had another two-run inning in the seventh.  Highlighting this frame was a double by Melissa Neyhouse, which scored Alexis Rogers.  Unfortunately, Belmont Abbey could not bring any more runners home, and the Pioneers won the game 9-5.

Helms went 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI.  Helms gave up just two earned runs in five innings pitched.

In the nightcap, it took the Pioneers three innings to record their first run on the Crusaders.  Tusculum brought four runs across in the fourth.  In the bottom of the inning, Elena Duran and Pereiro hit back-to-back singles.  A walk by Pegram loaded the bases, but the Crusaders were unable to score.  Tusculum finished off the game with a 10-0 win.

Pereiro went 2-for-3 in the contest.  Ivorie Maltby pitched the last 2.1 innings and gave up just one earned run.

On the day, Pereiro led the Crusaders offensively, going a combined 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Belmont Abbey will continue playing in the tournament tomorrow, with an 11 a.m. game against Goldey-Beacom College.
