Women's Basketball Downed At Wingate, 65-53

The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team saw its four game winning streak snapped as it suffered a 65-53 defeat at Wingate this afternoon in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 5-1, while the Crusaders drop to 5-3. Belmont Abbey is back in action Wednesday when hosting Barton at 5:30 in the Conference Carolinas home opener.

Belmont Abbey took a quick lead, scoring the first four points of the game on jumpers from McKenzie Owen and Morgan Midkiff, but Wingate answered with nine straight to grab a lead it would never lose again.

Wingate's first half advantage grew to as high as 31-22, but the Abbey sliced into the lead with six-straight points-coming on layups from Candace Fox and Owen and a Midkiff layup-to drop the deficit to 31-28, but the Bulldogs countered with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back to seven with 1:06 left. Midkiff closed the first half with a pair of free throws with one second left-the last of her 11 points in the period-to cut the Wingate lead to 35-30 at the break.

The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 6-0 run through the first 1:53, which forced an Abbey timeout. After the break, another Wingate run moved its lead to 14 at 46-32 with 14:04 left, and the Abbey could not get any closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Bulldogs claimed a 12 point win.

Owen led the Crusaders with 17 points on seven of 13 shooting from the floor, while Midkiff finished with 16 points, 11 in the first half, to go along with six assists, four rebounds and a steal.

Belmont Abbey shot 35 percent from the floor but was just one of 16 from three-point range.
