Downing Scores 18 as Abbey Takes #18 Panthers to Overtime

BELMONT, N.C. - Sophomore Allie Downing scored 18 points as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball took #18-ranked Virginia Union into overtime, though the Panthers prevailed 69-66.  The setback puts The Abbey at 2-2 this season.  Virginia Union is now 3-0.

How it Happened

  • The game was back-and-forth early, with neither team building a lead bigger than three for the first seven minutes of the contest.  The Panthers led 19-12 after the first quarter ended
  • It took Brittany Autry and Maria Kuhlman less than a minute into the second to score the period's first four points.  Later in the period, Kuhlman and Downing made back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Crusaders to within two points at 26-24
  • Virginia Union led 34-27 at halftime
  • Early in the third, Downing scored five points in a 49-second span
  • With Virginia Union leading by seven with 2:50 to play in the quarter, the Crusader defense forced the Panthers into a 2:48 scoreless drought.  During that span, The Abbey took a one-point lead, and the Panthers led 47-46 heading into the final period
  • Another 3-pointer by Downing tied the game at 51
  • Later in the period, Keyanna Spivey hit a layup and made the ensuing free throw to pull the Crusaders within two at 57-55
  • With 1:45 in the quarter, two Kuhlman free throws tied the game at 59 with 1:45 left.  After the period ended, the game was tied at 61.
  • Autry gave The Abbey a 63-61 lead early in the overtime period.  However, a run by the Panthers sealed the 69-66 win
  • Downing finished with a double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Kuhlman added 13 points
