Belmont Abbey Falls to Wheeling Jesuit 14-13

The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team lost to Wheeling Jesuit this afternoon 14-13 at Alumni Field.  The Crusaders gave up nine second-half goals in the loss.  With the loss, the Abbey drops to 3-3 on the year, while Wheeling Jesuit moves to 3-0.

The Cardinals scored the first goal of the game, but Belmont Abbey responded just 31 seconds later with a goal by midfielder Caitlin Cook to tie the game at 1.  Midfielder Katelin Glass scored the next goal to put the Abbey up 2-1.  Later in the half, with the Crusaders trailing 4-3, Glass put another shot in the net to tie the game at four.  About two minutes later, Cook scored to give the Abbey a 5-4 lead.  Hofmeister later scored off a free position to put the Crusaders in front 6-4.  Belmont Abbey scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the half to own a 9-5 lead at halftime.

It only took the Abbey two and a half minutes to score two goals in the second half, from Rebecca Luca and Cook.  However, the Cardinals scored four straight goals after that.  Luca found the back of the net with 19:32 in the game to stop the Cardinal run and put the Crusaders up 12-9. Unfortunately, the Crusaders only scored one goal from that point on and suffered a 14-13 loss.

On the day, Cook led the Crusaders' offense with four goals on five shots and an assist.  Luca contributed three goals and an assist.

Rebecca Stromberg led the Crusaders with five draw control wins.  Mackenzie Miller caused four Cardinal turnovers, while Kassie Easter caused three.  Crusader goalies earned seven saves on the day.

The Abbey will next visit Converse Thursday afternoon at 5:30 for their first conference game.
