BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team played Wingate down to the wire today on Senior Day. The Wingate won the contest 8-7 to improve to 3-1 in 2017. The Abbey is now 3-3.
Belmont Abbey struck first as Rebecca Luca scored the first goal of the day, just 3:17 into the contest. Two minutes later, Luca helped Madison Eberhardt with a score and a 2-0 Crusaders lead. Then at the 19:42 mark, Eberhardt scored a free position goal to put the Abbey in front, 3-0. With 14:01 in the half, the Bulldogs tied the game up at three. The Abbey quickly responded, as Luca put a shot in the net and the Crusaders regained the lead. Wingate led 5-4 at halftime.
It only took Luca 1:48 into the second half to notch the score up at five. She scored again with 15:12 to play to tie the game at six. The Crusader defense also held strong surrendering just one Wingate score in the first 16 minutes of the half. At the 8:06 mark, Luca again scored a game-tying goal. The Bulldogs did tally one final score with under two minutes to play, and they finished the game with an 8-7 win.
Luca finished the day with a game-high five goals, as well as an assist and three caused turnovers. Her 17 goals on the season put her in sixth place in Conference Carolinas. Freshman Amber Eakins also caused three Wingate turnovers, while earning a game-high five ground balls. Eberhardt scored twice for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey will next face off against Erskine on Wednesday at 4pm in Due West, SC.
