SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Marin Felsoci led an abundance of scorers in Belmont Abbey's 18-5 win at Converse College this afternoon. It was the first Conference Carolinas game of the season for the Crusaders, who are now 4-2 overall. The Valkyries dipped to 2-6 overall, and 0-4 in conference play.
It only took Madison Eberhardt 1:07 into the game to score the first goal of the day. Felsoci and Rebecca Stromberg each tallied scores in the first five minutes of the game, as The Abbey jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Crusaders scored each of the game's first eight goals, capped by a score from Yasmina Hernandez at the 18:50 mark, off a pass from Jenna Niedzwiedzki. Angelina Perrone and Katherine Haenlein each scored free position goals, putting The Abbey in front 10-1. Felsoci capped off the half with a man-up goal at the 4:53 mark, while the defense played strong the rest of the half, and the Crusaders owned a commanding 12-2 lead at halftime.
Haenlein got the scoring started off in the second. Hernandez tallied her second goal of the day off a pass from Eva Stahlschmidt to make it a 14-3 game. Allison Cline scored the final Abbey goal of the day at the 9:44 mark. From there, the Valkyries only manages to score one more goal on the tough Crusader defensive unit, and The Abbey earned the 18-5 victory.
On the day, Rebecca Luca scored two goals and handed out four assists, earning six points on the day to lead the Crusader offensive surge. Felsoci scored four goals and handed out an assist. She also caused three Valkyrie turnovers. Hernandez picked up four ground balls, tied for the game-high. The Abbey defensive unit caused 19 turnovers and held Converse 7-15 on clear attempts. The Abbey outshot Converse 32-16.
Belmont Abbey will head to Wingate on Wednesday, March 14 for a 4 p.m. contest.
