WINGATE, N.C. - Rebecca Luca scored six goals, leading Belmont Abbey to a 14-13 comeback win over Wingate University this afternoon. With the win, The Abbey improves to 5-2 in 2018, while the Bulldogs dipped to 1-7.
Marin Felsoci got the Crusaders on the board first with a goal 5:36 in the game. The Abbey fell behind 4-1 before Luca scored two goals in less than a minute. Two more Wingate scores put the Bulldogs up 7-3. From there, Luca and Felsoci scored on back-to-back possessions. Another Luca goal, her fourth of the period, with less than a minute to go in the half, pulled The Abbey to within a goal by halftime, 8-7. The Abbey defensive unit forced four Wingate turnovers in the last nine minutes of the period.
Luca tied the game at eight just 2:40 into the second. Allison Cline added a goal at the 19:00 mark, and less than 30 seconds later, Luca gave Belmont Abbey its first lead of the day. The Bulldogs took a 13-11 lead later in the period. Then Stromberg scored two goals in the last three minutes of the game, capped by a score 45 seconds remaining off a pass from Allison Cline, and the Crusaders finished with a 14-13 victory.
On the day, Luca led the offensive attack with eight goals. Cline scored a goal and dished out two assists. Marin Felsoci won eight draw controls. The defensive unit caused eight Bulldog turnovers.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action on Saturday, March 17, when it welcomes Chowan University for a 3 p.m. contest.
