Wrestling Falls To Ninth-Ranked Shorter, Blanks Truett-McConnell At Coker Duals

The Belmont Abbey wrestling team finished 1-1 at the Coker Duals, falling to ninth-ranked Shorter 32-14 and shutting out Truett-McConnell 54-0 as the Crusaders earned several impressive victories.

Belmont Abbey is back in action Saturday at 1:00 when it kicks off Senior Weekend with a match against Coker inside the Wheeler Center.

In the first match of the day, the Crusaders jumped out to an early lead as they won three of the first five matches before the opposition swept the final five matches to claim the 32-14 victory.

Senior Patrick Mestrez, who is ranked atop the regional rankings and seventh nationally at 125 pounds, got things started with an easy 9-1 major decision victory. After a loss at 133 and 141,  Scott Bosak kept his unbeaten streak intact with a win by fall with five seconds left in the first period in the 149 pound bout. Daniel Callahan, ranked fifth regionally at 157 pounds, scored a 12-4 major decision win, but Shorter claimed the last five bouts, two by fall, to earn a 34-12 win.

The second match of the day was no contest, as all ten Crusaders won their bouts. Mestrez picked up a first period pinfall, followed by a William Rees overtime win at 133. Will James scored an 8-0 major decision win at 141, and Bosak ran his season record to a perfect 9-0 with a first period pinfall at 149.

Callahan won by forfeit, then three straight pinfalls followed, starting with Jake Glunt at 165, Patrick Argast at 174 and Kelly Baker at 184. Gerry Vassil and Chaas Delgado both earned wins by forfeit.
