KUTZTOWN, PA. – The Belmont Abbey wrestling team competed in four matches as a part of the Kutztown Duals. The Crusaders competed against Shippensburg, East Stroudsburg, LIU-Post and host Kutztown. They were able to pick up a win this season improving their record to 8-8.
In the first match of the tournament the Crusaders took on Shippensburg. They were outscored 25-19. The Abbey was able to record four bout wins including Greg Hilliard's 12 win of the season and ninth pin in 1:20 in the 127 weight class. Jake Glunt captured his ninth win of the year with his fourth major decision, 12-4 in the 165 weight class. Chaas Delgado tallied his 10th win with a 3-1 decision in the 285 weight class.
The Crusaders defeated East Stroudsburg in their second match by the score of 27-24. The Abbey captured six bouts utilizing two falls. Troy Gregor got the Crusades on the board with his 19-16 decision in the 141 weight class. Hilliard recorded his second pin of the day in the 157 weight class and Seth Bridgeman battled for his third pin of the season in the 174 weight class.
Day two of the duals saw the Crusaders took on PIU-Post. A very competitive match that saw each team win five bouts ended with LUI-Post edging out the Crusaders by one point, 23-22. Michael Bedard captured the 125 weight class matchup with a major decision 15-1, Bedard's third of the season. Hilliard kept his momentum with his third win of the tournament with a 5-3 decision. Bridgeman continued his success with his second pin of the duals in the 174 weight class. Delgado logged his second win as well with a well-earned 1-0 decision.
The Crusaders wrapped up the duals against the tournament host, Kutztown. The Golden Bears defeated the Crusaders 32-11. Johnathan Gahagan registered his sixth win of the season and second pin in the 149 weight class. Hilliard completed his perfect tournament with a 17-2 technical fall.
Friday January 27 with Crusaders will host the Midwest Regional Duals. The duals will consist of five schools, Tiffin, Findlay, UNC-Pembroke, Limestone, and Belmont Abbey, with matches taking place at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. inside the Wheeler Center.
