The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team scored two goals in the first eight minutes to seize control early and the Crusaders added a late first half goal and another in the second half to post a 4-0 win over the visiting Converse College Valkyries this afternoon at Alumni Field on Senior Day. Belmont Abbey improves to 11-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while Converse drops to 8-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in league play.
Just 6:40 into the match, Gebreyesus put the Abbey ahead 1-0 as she scored from the left corner of the box after taking a pass from Meghan Philp for her ninth goal of the year. It is her third-straight match with a goal and her fourth in the same time frame.
49 seconds later, Philp added to her assist with a goal, as she slammed home a header past Gabie Chamberland off of a high cross from Laura Shelton for her sixth goal of the year.
The Crusaders added one more in the 31st minute as Jillian Lang scored her third career goal. Lang stopped a Converse clearing attempt, settled the ball and fired a low, knuckling shot that dipped around Chamberland for her first goal since September 25.
Belmont Abbey tacked on a late goal in the 81st minute, as Vazquez converted a penalty kick after Michelle Rindone tripped Cassidy Coutinho in the box. The marker is Vazquez's first goal of the year.
The final stats saw the Abbey hold the edge in shots at 16-7 and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Chamberland made four saves, while Hannah Kohls stopped two easy shots.
