The 19th-ranked Belmont Abbey women's soccer team came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw this afternoon at the Jeff May Complex. Both teams are now 1-0-1 on the season.
Lander jumped ahead early, as Sydney Thompson scored just in front of the goal in the 16th minute. 20 minutes later, the Abbey gained its first equalizer as junior Cassidy Coutinho converted a penalty kick after a Lander foul inside the box. Belmont Abbey outshot Lander 6-3 in the opening period.
The second half mirrrored the first, as Lander scored an early goal-coming in the 51st minute-on a Kimberly Kesler unassisted tally to move the Bearcats back in front.
Lander's lead stood up until the final ten minutes of regulation. With just over nine minutes to play, Meghan Philp scored on her own rebound when her original shot hit the post and came right back to her.
Lander had the only shot in the second overtime period, which Hannah Kohls easily saved for her fourth and final stop of the day.
The final stats showed Lander narrowly outshooting the Abbey 12-11 and the Bearcats attempted all nine of the match's corner kicks.
