Abbey Gets 2-0 Win For 2-0 Record

BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory this afternoon against the visiting USC Aiken Pacers.  The win puts the Crusaders' record at 2-0 while USC Aiken dipped to 2-1.

The first half was mostly a defensive battle, as Belmont Abbey only took five shots in the period, while the Pacers were permitted three.

The second saw an offensive increase from both sides.  The Crusaders scored their first goal of the game just 51 seconds into the half for a 1-0 lead as freshman Alex Butorovich found the back of the net with a header off a pass from Brooke Hedgspeth.  Twelve minutes later, junior Cassie Manion put another header in goal to up the Abbey lead to 2-0.  The Pacers did not go away quietly however, as they took several shots from close range to keep the Crusader defenders busy.

On the day, the Belmont Abbey defense limited USC Aiken to seven shots, three on goal, and no corner kicks.  The Abbey took 11 shots and had four corner kicks.  Goalie Kaitlyn Paul made three saves on the day, en route to her second consecutive shutout.

The Crusaders will next host Catawba on Saturday at 2 p.m. in its Raise the Red match.
