DUE WEST, SC - The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team won 4-0 on the campus of Erskine College this afternoon. The Abbey is now 8-2-1 on the season, with a 5-1 conference record. Erskine is now 3-8, with a 2-4 record against conference opposition.
It did not take long for the Abbey offense to get in gear. Forward Chandler Arrowood took a corner kick less than a minute into the game. She also took the first shot of the game, which came in the second minute. In the fourth minute, the Crusaders took back-to-back corners to put a high amount of pressure on. The Crusaders continued to get one shot after another, including one by forward Kooba Richard that hit the corner of the crossbar. Defensively, the Abbey only allowed two Erskine shots in the period. The game remained scoreless at haltime.
The high-powered offense combined, with a stingy defense, continued into the second half, with Belmont Abbey getting multiple shots in the period's opening minutes. In the 55th minute, freshman Sydney Pluhacek scored the first goal of the day off a free kick from 20 yards out. Belmont Abbey kept more offensive opportunities, and in the 76th minute, junior Morgan Altieri took a shot that forced the Erskine goalkeeper to juggle the ball before making the save. In the last ten minutes of the match, goals came often for the Crusaders. Midfielder Theresa Sloat set up Kooba Richard for a goal in the 81st. Less than five minutes later, freshman Allyson Elliott made it a 3-0 Abbey lead off a shot from the left side. Then with 2:12 remaining, Elliott scored her second goal of the day off a pass from defender Kat Laughlin for a 4-0 Abbey lead.
On the day, the Crusaders outshot the Flying Fleet 18-9 and took seven corner kicks to Erskine's two. Freshman Kaitlyn Paul made six saves in goal.
Acting head coach Jaime Malilong offered the following comments: "The ladies did a great job executing our game plan. They worked really hard from front to back, playing for each other today. It feels good to string back-to-back wins in the manner that we did."
The Crusaders will welcome North Greenville on Wednesday, October 12 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
