Women's Tennis Announces 2019-20 Recruiting Class

BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey Women's Tennis Head Coach Mike Salomon announced his recruiting class for the 2019-20 season today.

Sophia Boatright - Broussard, La. - Ascension Episcopal HS

At Ascension Episcopal School, Sophia led her team to the State Championship all 4 years including being named MVP in 2015.  She also received a USTA Southern Sportsmanship award in 2018 while playing USTA tournaments in the Southern Section.

Coach Salomon on Boatright: "Sophia comes from a powerhouse high school program in Louisiana. Having been a part of 4 State team championships, she knows a lot about the attitude it takes to make a successful and positive team environment. Sophia is a crafty lefty with a great mindset who will be able to step into our system seamlessly. We are really excited about her joining her sister Blair here at the Abbey next fall."


Sylvia Goldsmith - Mansfield, Ohio – Lexington HS

At Lexington HS, Sylvia was a 4x conference champion as well as a the 4x conference player of the year. She also qualified for the state tournament in each of her 4 years in addition to competing in USTA tournaments in the Midwestern Section

Coach Salomon on Goldsmith: "Sylvia comes to Belmont Abbey as one of the top players in the state of Ohio. She has been a multi-sport athlete all the way through high school and brings a very high level of discipline along with a great positive energetic attitude that will add to our team environment. We are very excited for her to start having her impact on our program next fall."


Elliott Peterson - Tampa, Fla. - Robinson HS

At Robinson High School as a Freshman, Elliott won Districts and led the team to its first ever appearance at the state championship tournament. In addition, Elliott competed in USTA junior tournaments, including at the national level.

Coach Salomon on Peterson: "Elliott's attitude really impressed us from the beginning of the recruiting process.  She is very process-oriented in her approach to the game and is a great fit for our player development system.  She does an excellent job paying attention to the details both on and off the court and will be a great addition to our tennis family."


Madelyn Schott - Roswell, Ga. - Blessed Trinity HS

At Blessed Trinity, Maddy was undefeated all 4 years in her region. She led her team to back to back regional championships, and individually reached the Georgia state semifinals.  She was a team captain and received the coaches award in addition to competing in tournaments in the Southern USTA section.

Coach Salomon on Schott: "Maddy comes to Belmont Abbey as one of the top ranked players in the very challenging Atlanta region. She has a winning attitude and an enthusiasm for sharing it with the people around her that makes her a great fit for our program. Her work ethic and commitment are 2 big reasons to look forward to what she can do here over the next 4 years."


Kayla Vaughan - St. Johns, Fla. - Bartram Trail HS

At Bartram Trail High School, Kayla played line one on the girls tennis team receiving the St Johns River Athletic Conference All-Conference Award. She was also a member of the Florida's Zonals team for two years, receiving awards for being a finalist in the Southeast bracket and Consolation Runner-Up in USTA national and regional doubles tournaments. 

Coach Salomon on Vaughan: "Kayla brings high level playing experience from one of the toughest junior sections in the country. She has a fantastic attitude and focused competitive drive that, along with her athleticism, make us very excited for Kayla to join the Abbey family and start her development in our team environment."


Coach Salomon offered some thoughts on the class overall: "Both Coach Raines and myself felt like in addition to being a very talented recruiting class, that these five young ladies will be able to live out the ideals of our program together in our team pursuit of being the very best we are capable of both on and off the court.  We are excited to work towards setting the standard, not just in the Conference Carolinas, but across all of college tennis."

Belmont Abbey will kickoff its upcoming spring season on February 1, when it visits USC Aiken.
