Women's Indoor Track & Field Sets Four School Records At Gamecock Open

The Belmont Abbey Track Team set 4 school marks at the USC Gamecock Open held Wednesday evening at the Fieldhouse on the Columbia Campus.

The best performer of the evening was Saralee Martelly who set 2 of the 3 records.  She High Jumped 1.47m (4' 9.75") which was good for a 3rd place finish in the event.  She also placed 9th in the Prelims of the 55m Hurdles, with a time of 9.44.

Lauren Smith set the standard in the 55m Dash with a time of 7.90, which earned her a 29th place finish in the Prelims out of 42 competitors.

Leondra Pridgen turned in the final mark of the evening with a Shot Put of 7.86m (25' 9.5"), which earned her 9th Place in the event.

All four of the marks were the first time the events were contested indoor by a member of the program, as this is just the 2nd full season of Indoor Track for the BAC Program, also, the USC Fieldhouse is not the conventional 200m oval.  The Track is 250m with 4 straightaways and 4 turns, thus the team did not bring any of the distance program, and the 55m Dash and Hurdles are events that are not held often, as the standard distance is 60m for the sprint events.

Coach Mike De Witt had these comments on the USC Meet:  "This meet was a perfect opportunity for the women to compete in the Field Events for the first time, as well as sprint.  The 17 schools that participated had many athletes doing the same thing.  Our group has done some workouts for the events and looked comfortable and competed well.  It was a good evening to get used to doing multiple events for the outdoor Heptathlon which they are excited to attempt this spring."
