Martelly & Crisci Break School Records At Tar Heel Open

Saralee Martelly and Bri Crisci finished up a busy week of track for the Belmont Abbey College Program, which was competing in its 3rd meet in 7 days to get the short Indoor Season off to a strong start.

Martelly led off the day with School Record in the Triple Jump.  She set the standard this past Sunday with a distance of 10.21m and improved that record to 10.49 (34' 5").  That also earned her a 7th place finish in the field of 12 jumpers.

Crisci also improved on her School Record in the 800m Run, which she did break last Sunday as well, when she ran 2:29.88.  She ran a 2:27.78 which earned her a 7th Place finish out of 33 runners in the event.  Marilynn Guevara also improved on her best time with a 2:38.96 effort good for 23rd in the event.

Lucy Schmitz was the winner of the 3000m Run with a time of 10:24.22 and team mate Ally Craven placed 8th in the event with a time of 11:13.22.  There were 22 runners in the event.  Schmitz took control of the race over the final 5 laps to pull away from runner-up Caroline Rieser of Florida International.  The 2nd thru 7th runners were all Division I athletes, as well as 10th thru 12 runners in the field.

A total of 18 teams competed, including 10 NCAA I Programs.

Coach Mike De Witt had this to say about the teams performance:  "We had an excellent first week of track meets, anytime you are competing better than ever in the first week of the season you are showing that you have done a great job of preparation over the break.  The best part of the outcomes is that the team competed very well, they understand, better than ever, that final results will be excellent when you compete smart and used your strengths.  The group was fun to watch!"
