Lucy Schmitz Wins 10,000 Meters As Women's Track & Field Sits Sixth After Opening Day Of Conference Carolinas Championships

Belmont Abbey junior Lucy Schmitz accounted for 10 of Belmont Abbey's 17 points with a 49 second win in the 10,000 meter run on the opening day of the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on the campus of Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina.

The Crusaders finished opening day in sixth place with 17 points, with Schmitz and Saralee Martelly responsible for all 17 points.

Schmitz scored ten points with her dominating win in the 10K, crossing the line with a time of 40:14.81.

Martelly tacked on seven points to the Crusaders total, starting with a seventh place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters. She added five more points with a fourth place effort in the triple jump. She leaped to a mark of 11.20.

The final day begins tomorrow morning.
