The Belmont Abbey Women's Track & Field team finished 14th out of 15 college teams in the Johnson C. Smith Invitational today in Charlotte, NC.
Junior Liz Thierfelder ran the 100 Meter Dash in 12.58 seconds, good enough for 14th place out of 29 runners. She also ran an impressive 400 Meter Dash, clocking a 57.88-second run, which was sixth out of 21 runners. Amanda Steiner also ran in this event, with a 1:09 run.
In the 800 Meter Run, senior Lucy Schmitz clocked a 2:28 run, which was 12th out of about 40 collegiate runners. She also placed third in this event out of all Conference Carolinas runners. Also competing in this event were Elizabeth Labun (2:34), Amber Arias (2:39), and Shanon Corbett (3:08).
The field events, particularly the discus, went well for the Abbey as sophomore Lauren Morrow threw 26.75 meters, which was fourth out of all Conference Carolinas throwers. Lindsay Paul also threw 20.5 meters. Morrow also competed in the shot put, where she threw 8.05 meters, while freshman Desenia Sanchez recorded 9.39 meters.
Rounding out the field events were javelin throwers Hickin (18.92m) and Randazzo (18.69m).
The Men's team finished 10th out of all collegiate teams, as senior Zach Melvin won the 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 10:49. In 800 Meter Run, Connor Buhrmeister led the Abbey with a time of 2:00. EJ Cerdeiras (2:03) and Mac Makela (2:13) also participated in this race.
In the sprints, freshman Matthew Difrancesco finished second out of all Conference Carolinas runners in the 100 Meter Dash, which he completed in 11.17 seconds. Also running this event were Tarik Amon (11.74), Darius Gardner 11.81), and Stephane Rivard (12.24). Rivard also ran a 24.72-second 200 Meter Dash.
In the 400 Meter Dash, Alex Abalos finished second out of all Conference Carolinas runners with a 52.14-second race. Joe Thierfelder was right behind him at 52.53 seconds.
Belmont Abbey was impressive in the hurdles, as Michael Koceja clocked a 58.11-second 400 Meter Hurdle, sixth place overall and top in Conference Carolinas competition in the event. Also, Warren Jones ran a 16.99-second 110 Meter Hurdle.
Belmont Abbey's 4x100 Meter Relay team, consisting of Amon, Koceja, Abalos, and Difrancesco, finished fourth out of all the collegiate teams in the event.
For field events, Thierfelder threw a javelin 39.22 meters, while Gardner recorded a 5.65 meter long jump.
The team will compete next weekend at the Campbell Invitational in Buies Creek, NC.
